What if we could view the 2024 eclipse even if obstructed by cloud?

This was the question asked by the Engineering Physics Faculty at Queen’s University in Fall of 2023. As a capstone group, we designed, built, and demonstrated the capability to view solar emissions even in inclement weather conditions. I was responsible for accurately and repeatably actuating our parabolic reflector.

This design won us 1st place at the:

  • 2024 PEO Student Papers Competition

  • 2024 IEEE Capstone Competition

We were able to use the design during the April 8th 2024 Eclipse under the path of Totality in Kingston, Ontario, and are currently processing the data collected to generate a GIF of the event. Stay tuned!
